The controversy over the border fence is what inspired the creation of bordercommerce.com. At first, it simply started with letters to people of political influence or of national recognition. Such a fence was totally the wrong answer, especially along an urban area like El Paso and Cd Juarez Mexico that was treated the same as if it were an open desert which was just a fence. |
It may be difficult to imagine how a fence may not be the right solution in the long run since most believe that it stops people from crossing over and that may seem successful.
It could be similar to people building higher fences around private property which will probably keep people out also. But you never see architectural drawing showing large fences as a prominent feature of a construction project.
There is a reason for this. Every project wants to demonstrate a positive welcoming feeling towards the project. A sense of exclusion or not welcoming drawing will never be portrayed.
The same it is with the border fence. Although the USA is signaling that no one is welcomed over the border within the city as per a 15 foot fence, that same message can be offered in an entirely different manner.

It is an effort to use real estate development to create the spaces and use of land that occupies this area constantly which creates security through its occupation.
Through the website, examples have been offered as a way to demonstrate what can take place on the border which creates security. A plan of how this can be done and guidelines how to implement have even been suggested.
What is needed is a discussion about the border fence in an urban environment and what other alternatives there may be.
